This type of therapy utilizes dual attention and/or bilateral stimulation or movements to help people process distressing experiences. It has been found effective for a variety of symptoms and diagnoses. In my experience, it has been a helpful tool and is the primary modality I use. It allows you to access information stored from stressful experiences (sensations, emotions, urges, beliefs about yourself, etc.) and connect to new information and resources. My clients have shared that they often feel "unstuck" or that the memory is now in the past.

If you have heard of parts work therapy or ego state therapy, likely it was a reference to a number of treatment approaches that honor a person as a collection of parts of self. These parts are shaped by our experiences and often carry different viewpoints, roles, and needs. In therapy, we work to understand all of our parts and free them from the burden and wounds they may be carrying. If you have experienced an enduring trauma, that lasted a longer amount of time, you may have parts of self that were shaped by these experiences and need help healing. This type of therapy is also helpful for working through internal conflicts.
